England - Part 7 - Leeds Castle

A peacock
There were a lot of birds that lived around the
castle on the grounds.  There was an area
that was fenced in where a lot of
ducks and stuff.

Canterbury Cathedral
After we left Leeds Castle, we hurried to
try and get a tour of Canterbury Cathedral.
Once we arrived, we found out that BBC Radio
was going to be broadcasting an Evensong
Service live from the Cathedral.

Canterbury Cathedral
We attended the Evensong.  Everyone was
seated in the choir loft area.  Later a choir of
men and boys entered and seated in the
reserved area in the choir loft.

Here are some short MP3 recordings I made
with my digital camera.  There is a clicking
sound that I think is the automatic focus trying
to find something to focus on.  Sorry!

Canterbury Cathedral
This is the cathedral where the Archbishop of Canterbury has his throne.
Sir Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury was martyred here.
A shrine to him was built (essentially a tomb) and people started making
pilgrimages to visit it.  Chaucer wrote the Canterbury Tales about
pilgrims on this journey.
After we attended the Evensong, a nice gentleman who sat by us offered to show us the
place where Becket was killed.  Then he took us to the place where Becket's tomb
used to reside at the highest point in the Cathedral.  The tomb was removed after the
reformation (because we worship God, not men!)  Then the man took us to the steps
where the pilgrims would climb up.  Legend has it that the pilgrims would ascend the
stairs on their knees.  The stone steps were heavily worn.  They had deep troughs where
the pilgrims stepped.
...But don't take my word for it...
